Model Release

The document every photographer needs and most improvise on a phone note. It records who the subject is, which images it covers, and — the part that actually matters years later — exactly what was granted: commercial or editorial or portfolio use, in which territory, for how long, with or without credit, and what was deliberately excluded. A release is not a formality; it is the evidence you had permission, and it is normally needed at the moment a client wants to license an image commercially, which is usually long after the shoot when the subject is unreachable. Fill it in on the day, get it signed on the day.

Frequently asked

Does signing this make any use of the image lawful?

No, and that is an important limit. A release addresses the subject's permission. It does not resolve trademark, privacy, publicity or platform rules, and it does not override what a venue, school, club or employer separately requires. Those are distinct questions.

Is this legal advice?

No. It is a starting document to adapt. Rights in images differ by country and by intended use, and a shoot with real commercial value is worth a lawyer's eyes.

Why does it ask about territory and duration?

Because a release without them is ambiguous, and ambiguity is resolved against whoever wrote it. Saying "worldwide, in perpetuity" is a choice; so is saying "UK only, three years". Making it explicit is the whole point.
