Eligibility Screener & Search Strategy

Three things, none of which requires knowing what is currently posted anywhere. First, a screen of what would actually stop you: no active SAM.gov registration or no UEI means you cannot take a federal award at all; no 501(c)(3) determination and no fiscal sponsor closes most private foundations; thin financial history narrows your options rather than ending them. Each finding says what it means and what to do next. Second, a search strategy built from your own profile — which funder lanes suit an organisation like yours, the filters to set on the public portals, and the technique most small nonprofits never use, which is reading the 990s and annual reports of organisations like yours to find out who already funds this work. Third, a go/no-go rubric for something you have found, scored transparently so you can see every point and disagree with it. Be clear about what this is not: it holds no list of grants. It is offline and has no clock, so it cannot know what is open or when anything is due, and a stale deadline would cost you more than no deadline. It teaches the method; the listings always come from the funder.

Frequently asked

Does it find actual grants I can apply for?

It does not, and no honest offline tool could. It has no grant database and no internet connection. What it does is tell you precisely where to search, what filters and search terms to use for an organisation with your profile, how to mine peer 990s for funders, and how to judge what you find. The opportunities themselves come from the portals and the funders, which are the only current source.

Why won't it tell me the single-audit threshold or the indirect rate?

Because both have changed, and a figure baked into an offline tool is wrong the moment it moves — on exactly the questions where being wrong is expensive. It points you at 2 CFR 200 to confirm the current numbers instead.

Can it tell me whether I'm eligible for a specific grant?

No. Eligibility is defined by each funder in its own notice, and only that notice governs. The screener reports what is and is not in place at your organisation, which is the part that is the same across every application.
